Meet Rusty: Why I Started Axiom Financial

If you’re going to trust someone with one of the biggest financial decisions you’ll make, I think you should probably know a little bit about who they are first.
I’m Russell — although most people know me as Rusty — and I’m one of the founders of Axiom Financial.
I’m Newcastle born and bred, a husband, a dad of two, and for close to a decade I’ve owned and operated CrossFit Prolific in Merewether.
Running a gym might seem like a strange path into mortgage broking, but in a lot of ways, it’s exactly what led me here.
For me, it’s always been about people
Owning a gym taught me pretty quickly that people rarely need someone to simply tell them what to do.
They need someone who listens, understands what they’re trying to achieve, explains their options clearly and helps them make a decision that actually suits their life.
Finance should be no different.
A home loan isn't just an interest rate or a number on a spreadsheet. It might be someone's first home. A family trying to get some breathing room by refinancing. An investment property they've spent years working towards. Or simply a plan to put themselves in a better financial position.
There’s a person and a goal behind every application.
That's the part of mortgage broking that appealed to me.
Why Axiom Financial?
Axiom Financial was built around a pretty simple idea: finance founded on principle.
We want people to understand what they're doing and why they're doing it.
That means taking the time to understand your situation, doing the work behind the scenes, explaining things without unnecessary jargon and helping you navigate the lending process from beginning to end.
We're not interested in making finance sound more complicated than it needs to be.
For me, a good outcome isn't just getting a loan across the line. It's having a client walk away feeling like they understood their options and made a well-informed decision.
Newcastle is home
I've lived, worked and raised my family here, and I've spent years building a business and community in Merewether.
Axiom is another opportunity to do that.
I want to build long-term relationships with people across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter — whether they're buying their first home, refinancing, investing or simply trying to work out what their next move might be.
And hopefully, years down the track, when they need help again — or a friend asks if they know a mortgage broker — we're the people they think of.
This blog won't just be about Axiom
This is probably the last article you'll see that's entirely about me.
From here, I want this blog to actually be useful.
We'll cover home loans, refinancing, first-home buying, investing, borrowing capacity and changes in lending that are worth knowing about.
I'll also try to answer the questions people regularly ask me — in normal English.
So whether you're ready to do something now or you're six or twelve months away and just trying to understand your options, hopefully you'll find something here that helps.
And if there's something you'd like to know, just ask.
Chances are, if you're wondering about it, someone else is too.
